"faithful adherence to a sovereign, government, leader, cause, etc."
To be loyal is to be faithful in a person or a group of people. So in the cause of Macbeth it was the loyalty to the king Duncan. In the second scene Macbeth showed his loyalty through the acts of war against his liege's enemies.
"No more that thane of Cawdor shall deceive
Our bosom interest: go pronounce his present death,
And with his former title greet Macbeth."
Because Cawdor betrayed Duncan he was stripped of his title and killed. However because Macbeth was loyal to Duncan he was given Cawdor's title.
"If good, why do I yield to that suggestion
Whose horrid image doth unfix my hair
And make my seated heart knock at my ribs,
Against the use of nature? Present fears
Are less than horrible imaginings."
Macbeth finds his loyalty wavering after hearing what the witches say about his future. That he would become kings, because two things that the witches have said became true. He started to picture himself as the king and as I result considers killing his king. Which would mean that he no longer feels loyal towards his king.
Loyalty towards people is fluid. If you use Macbeth as an example. he was once loyal towards his king. However his ambition will cause him to kill the man he was once loyal towards.
